WHO WE ARE

Help A Child Foundation is a Christian fundraising and child sponsorship organisation. We exist only for the sake of children, which makes us unique, and means we can put children’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. Our focus is also unique. We are unapologetically committed to giving children in the world’s poorest countries both the chance of a better life, and knowledge of Jesus. Inspired by the words of Jesus in Matthew 25, Mark 12 and Luke 25, we seek out and serve “the least of these.” Last year Help a Child was able to reach over 60,000 children across Africa and Asia, irrespective of background, caste, colour, gender or creed. To do this work, we rely entirely on the generousity of child sponsors and donors.

Together we are transforming children’s lives in His name. Help a Child commenced in Australia in the mid 1980’s. It grew out of an organisation in the Netherlands called ‘Red Een Kind’ (REK), literally translated as Help a Child, which has been operating since 1968.

HOW WE WORK

Help A Child Australia does not itself deliver services to children in need. Instead we partner with local organisations who have the cultural knowledge and expertise to impact children’s lives in the world’s poorest countries. Our role is to equip and support our partners, and provide rights-based, community development training so they can deliver life-saving services to children most in need. These services include:

Primary & Secondary Education

In each program, no matter what service is being provided, our staff and partners value children as unique creations of God. Each child is therefore given the chance to develop spiritually, psychologically, economically, socially and physically to the fullest of their potential.

  1. So today we are working on a number of project based activities. Several years ago, while travelling in and out of towns in India, I noticed the growth of urban slums, those blue tarp bamboo framed shanties that we have become so familiar with on the outskirts of major cities. Up to then we were concentrating on remote rural areas to deliver our programs. I began to think that a major issue for developing countries is the migration of people from rural areas to the cities looking for work. After that I visited an urban slum in Bangalore where 200 families, say 1200 people in Indian terms, lived. There was one water tap, no drainage, no sewage. And I thought then, we need to start working with these people. It is lot harder than working with rural communities where you do have a ready made community. In 2017 we started an urban slum project in Kolkata and we are about to start a similar project in Amritsar in the Punjab. This work requires a considerable rethink in the way we deliver such programs as there is no ready made community to start with, but it can be done. And with the help of our Lord, we are doing it.
